چکیده

The presence of nucleating agents in the hemolymph appears to be a characteristic feature of insects tolerant to freezing (10). Such nucleators have been found in the hemolymph of insects of several phylogenetic orders, i.e., Coleoptera (4, 8, 9, 1 l), Diptera (7), and Hymenoptera (5). The physiological function of these nucleators is suggested to be to induce a protective extracellular freezing at relatively high subzero temperatures, preventing injurious freezing in intracellular compartments (10). Several studies indicate that the concentration of nucleators varies seasonally and that they may be absent from the hemolymph during summer (4, 9, 11). Unfortunately, there is no method available which allows a quantitative determination of the level of nucleating agents in the hemolymph of insects. The purpose of the present study has been to develop a method for determining the concentration of nucleating agents in insect hemolymph. The method is developed from experiments with nucleators from hemolymph of freeze-tolerant Eleodes blanchardi beetles. The practical applicability of the method is demonstrated by measurements of nucleator concentrations in the hemolymph of the gall fly larvae, Eurosta solidaginis, acclimated to different temperatures.

Insect Cold-hardiness and Ice Nucleating Active Microorganisms Including Their Potential Use for Biological Control

Since most insects are unable to survive internal ice formation a key factor in their overwintering survival is the regulation of the temperature at which they spontaneously freeze. To enhance their supercooling capacity overwintering insects eliminate endogenous ice nucleators, accumulate low-molecular-weight polyols and sugars, and synthesize hemolymph antifreeze proteins. A number of freeze-...

On the Question of Parameters for Evaluating Cold Hardiness of Freeze Tolerant Insects

The super cooling point (SCP) is the best documented parameter for describing the ability of insects to survive freezing but its value as a predictor of overwintering survival or for estimation of the cold hardiness potential, is limited. According to this study, the SCP is influenced by such factors as polyol and protein concentration in the hemolymph; therefore it can be lower in winter than ...

Ingestion of Ice-nucleating Active Bacteria Increases the Supercooling Point of the Lady Beetle Hippodamia Convergens

Regulation of the temperature at which insects freeze is a critical factor in their overwintering survival. Although the role of ice-nucleating active bacteria in promoting frost-damage in plants is well known, their interaction with other organisms has not been described. In winter. many freeze-susceptible insects avoid freezing by lowering the temperature at which their body fluids spontaneou...

Expected nucleation effects of carboxylic acid salts on poly(1-butene)

9,10-Dihydro-9,10-ethano-anthracene-11,12-dicarboxylic acid disodium salt (DHEAS) was synthesized and used as a nucleating agent for poly(1-butene) (iPB). The isothermal crystallization kinetics of iPB having different nucleating agents were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). The results showed that the nucleating agents increased the...

Topical application of ice-nucleating-active bacteria decreases insect cold tolerance.

The majority of overwintering insects avoid lethal freezing by lowering the temperature at which ice spontaneously nucleates within their body fluids. We examined the effect of ice-nucleating-active bacteria on the cold-hardiness of the lady beetle, Hippodamia convergens, a freeze-intolerant species that overwinters by supercooling to ca. -16 degrees C. Topical application of the ice-nucleating...
